Specifically, I'm looking into possibly buying a slightly used set, as the Focus needs many $$$$ in repairs, and tires are also desperately needed as well, but I'm trying to keeps costs down so I can spend on struts & brakes. I've never purchased anything on the Ebay, so I'm trying to get a feel for this before taking the plunge.

I would not buy used tires off ebay. Check out the discount tire outlet store on ebay, they're offering some good deals on tires right now.

Do you not have a tire store in the less affluent part of town where you can get some used tires? i don't know that it's worth paying shipping on them. Worn out used up tires cost the same to ship as good ones.

be sure to check the DOT date. 4 digit number that shows for age momater how good they look. Example number would be 4307, which means the tire was made in the 43rd week of 2007.... with means it's 7 years old and no good. I never use tires over 6 years old. Even if they are dry rot free and have good tread

I bought a pair of Continental Extreme Contacts, slightly used, from eBay. 10/32 tread, which is effectively new for those tires. Your good sellers will tell you everything you need to know, and I'd absolutely buy used tires on eBay again, at least from reputable sellers.

I've actually got a few sets of used DOT slicks on my watch list right now, Incase a race breaks out and I need to get involved.

I know people who have had good experiences with this site:

http://www.bestusedtires.com/

But their prices seem to have gone up some, they used to be really good deals I thought.

Upgraded suspension on shitty tires is no better than stock suspension on great tires. The only thing keeping a car on the road are the tires. 4 very small patches where the rubber literally meets the road. Tires really aren't the area to make concessions.

Tires are not the area of the car where you want to skimp, or even be allowed to skimp. Go to America's Tire and get a GOOD set of tires, not the cheapest, and wait on the upgrades. You shouldn't even have upgrades on your mind if you can barely afford to buy tires.

Typically most ebay tire seller's are a website like tire-easy or onlinetires just listing their stock. Furthermore I have had no issues with either. I've ordered Federals and Achilles and been pleased with both. Just make sure you get the right tires at your doorstep. It's not uncommon for the wrong tires to show up.
